1823 - Architectural Jewel Hof New Town
House stories from the city fire until today
From October 21, 2023 to April 7, 2024, you can find out at the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland what stories lie behind the facades of the "Biedermeier Quarter". The exhibition of the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland wants to create a connection from the past to the current Biedermeier Quarter. Maybe the visitors will see the new town of Hof with more awake and knowing eyes after the exhibition tour. And perhaps new ideas and possibilities will develop to revive and preserve this rare architectural gem.
The great catastrophe
... and the heyday that followed it
The great fire of September 4, 1823, reduced around 90 percent of Hof's new town to rubble. The town hall, St. Michael's Church and almost 300 residential and commercial buildings burned to the ground. Around 3,000 people, almost two-thirds of Hof's population at the time, were left homeless and lost their belongings. An unprecedented catastrophe in the history of Hof.
From the ruins, the "new" Hof Neustadt blossomed in record time and with support from Germany and abroad - an architectural jewel in the style of the early 19th century that is rare in Germany. Classicist facades have characterized this part of town ever since.
Many of the houses in the area around Ludwigstrasse, Maxplatz, Karolinenstrasse, Auguststrasse and Klosterstrasse, affectionately called the "Biedermeier Quarter" by the people of Hof, have exciting stories to tell and show in various details that not all was lost after the fire.
